SILENCE IS A HARMONY MADE OF MANY LITTLE STILLS
by Maya Tevet Dayan
translation by Ayelet Rose Gottlieb

All summer long they flew around, insects with legs
as long as threads, bumping against
the windows. And in autumn -
they lay at the windowsill,
entangled in dust.
Fine, black sketches
of death.

We asked questions without
answers: Are the souls of thin insects
as large as those of elephants? Where do we
all go from here? And what really exists
in the place beyond the rain?

The raindrops that drip on us every morning
were once clouds, which were once
waters from this ocean,
in whose shallow waters we walked barefoot in the summer,
and the waters were still.

Like the clouds. Like the rain.
Like silent sketches of insects on the windowsill.
